Attorney Real Featured in Tampa Channel 10 News Segment

Attorney Catherine W. Real was recently featured in a Tampa Channel 10 News segment regarding a pending bill that could bring big changes to the way alimony and child custody are determined for divorcing couples in Florida. The bill, which is awaiting approval from Governor Rick Scott after being passed by the House, would require judges to begin with the presumption that children should spend equal time with each parent after a divorce, as well as eliminate permanent alimony for future divorces.
Attorney Real spoke in favor of the bill. “The best model so far is husband and wife working together to raise children,” Real said. “Children need role models, not just female role models, male role models.” Extensive research conducted by national parenting organizations support Ms. Real’s opinions, showing that children have a lower chance of dropping out of school or delinquency if both parents remain active in their lives following a divorce. This law would have the same effect in cases where a child’s parents are not married.
Governor Scott’s vetoed a similar bill that made it to his desk just a few years ago. This new version does not allow couples to retroactively change their existing custody orders. In addition, judges will still maintain the right to use their discretion after weighing the specific factors surrounding each case.
