Organizations Supporting The Elimination of Permanent Alimony In Florida

Clearly, the most organized group advocating the elimination of permanent alimony last year (2013) was Family Alimony Reform (see here). This site provides most of the information one would need about last year’s bill eliminating permanent alimony that was vetoed by the Governor. An e-mail newsletter is available by subscription. From the site, I was unable to locate much activity in 2014.
It will be interesting to see what position the Florida Bar’s Family Law Section will take this year. Even if the bill becomes law, an appeal regarding its constitutionality will most certainly be taken to the Florida Supreme Court. Since the Governor vetoed the 2013 bill on the grounds that it would be applied retroactively to all alimony awards still in full force and effect in Florida, I would suspect that the new bill would only apply to new divorce cases filed after the bill becomes law. In other words, this bill would not affect a current alimony award, but only time will tell.
